Welcome
I am a Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in the School of Social and Political Sciences and CEES Research Director at the University of Glasgow. I received my Ph.D. from Indiana University in July 2014. My research agenda lies at the intersection between international relations and comparative politics. In particular, I am interested in civil war, political violence, de facto states, rebel governance, state (un)making, international security, and research methods. I have regional expertise in the Soviet successor states of Eastern Europe and the Caucasus.
I am currently engaged in three large projects. The first investigates the survival and disappearance of de facto states - polities, like Abkhazia, Northern Cyprus, or Western Sahara, which display many statelike accoutrements except for international legal sovereignty. The second analyzes the variation in governance/state-building activities conducted by rebel organizations. The third examines the variation in military activities undertaken by insurgent groups and the impact of these activities on conflict processes.
